Every successful rugby club is built on strong foundations, and at Sedgley Park, our Mini & Junior section has long been a cornerstone of player development. Few stories capture that better than the rise of Sam Thorpe, a player who has grown through the ranks to earn his place in the 1st XV.

Sam began his rugby journey at Sedgley in the U10s, quickly showing the passion, skill and dedication needed to succeed. His progression through the age groups was marked by hard work and commitment, culminating in being part of a hugely successful Colts side that lifted the Lancashire Cup in 2023 – a highlight that underlined both his talent and the strength of the M&J system.

From an early age, Sam set his sights on wearing the Sedgley 1st XV shirt. Midway through last season, that ambition became a reality when he made his senior debut against Bishops Stortford. Impressively, he didn’t just make up the numbers – his performances earned him a regular spot in the side for the remainder of the campaign

Sam’s journey is a shining example of what can be achieved through determination, commitment, and the support of a strong development pathway.

His rise demonstrates the importance of investing in and nurturing our Mini & Junior section, which remains the heartbeat of the club and a source of inspiration for the next generation of Tigers.

For every young player pulling on a Sedgley jersey in the Mini & Junior ranks, Sam Thorpe’s story shows what’s possible: dream big, work hard, and one day, you too could be running out in the 1st XV shirt.
