It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of David Smith on Saturday night, surrounded by his family. Nothing will ever be the same. David is survived by his wife, Fiona, his 3 Children and 4 grandchildren, who will sorely miss him. All our thoughts at this very sad time are with his family and friends.

Although David was very much a family man, he was a very astute business man, taking the family plumbing business and building it into the major building firm it is today, whilst still retaining the ‘family’ ethos. His legacy will live on in the family who are left to continue the name.

Outside his family, David’s major love was Sedgley Park Rugby Club. Joining the Club in the mid-60s as a Colt and quickly moving up to the 1st XV, with his brothers John and Tony. Sedgley Park were in a period of flux before the advent of League Rugby and David took over from his brother Tony as Chairman of the Club in the mid-eighties and saw the club rise from the minnows who toppled Fylde in the Lancashire Cup (early 70s) to the Club playing the likes of Wasps, Northampton and Harlequins, at Park Lane. Truly inspirational.

David oversaw the building of the new clubhouse (with the support of an army of Club members) and then with, the aid of a lottery grant, built the Club and facilities that we take for granted today.

A wonderful father and truly inspirational leader. We will never see his like again at Sedgley Park.
