Tigers Battle the Elements to Claim Famous Win at Leeds
On Saturday, the Tigers travelled to Leeds Tykes for their first away game of the season — the first meeting between the clubs in many years. The Tykes had suffered defeats to Rotherham and Plymouth Albion, but Sedgley knew this would be no easy task against a physical and expansive side.
Conditions were dreadful with driving wind and rain, though the surface was excellent. Playing with the wind in the first half, the Tigers looked to build a lead, but it was the home side who struck first with a try in the corner after one minute.
The response was immediate. A powerful catch-and-drive saw No.8 Isaac Deans touch down, with Oli converting for a 7–5 lead after five minutes. Handling and line-out accuracy proved tricky, but the Tigers kept composure. A perfectly judged cross-kick from Oli found winger Rhys Henderson, who scored in the corner for 12–5. Moments later, Oli added a penalty to make it 15–5.
Despite losing Deans to a hamstring injury and lock Bob Birtwell to a head knock, the Tigers kept pressing. A sweeping move wide sent young winger Sam Thorpe over for the third try. At half-time, the visitors led 20–5 and looked in control.
The second half became a war of attrition as the wind turned against Sedgley. Leeds camped in the Tigers’ half, throwing everything at them, but the defence was immense. Even after lock Billy Addy departed with a knee injury, every replacement stood tall. Leeds could only manage a penalty on the hour, unable to break down Sedgley’s wall of resistance.
The whistle went on a superb 20–5 victory — a brilliant four-point win built on effort, physicality and sheer determination.
It was a performance where every player gave everything, though captain Connor James deserves a special mention for leading with heart and authority.
Next up, the Tigers return to Park Lane to face Bristol side Clifton. Despite their poor start, no team can be taken lightly. Only another top performance will keep the winning run going — so please get down and support your Tigers.
Cheers,
